How You Can Avoid Unlicensed Contractors in Southwest Florida

Hiring professional and licensed contractors in Southwest Florida is key to succeeding in your residential or commercial project – be it a painting project for your home or a renovation project for your office.

In our region, however, unlicensed contractors have become a problem for those looking for high-quality, trained, and proven help for whatever project is being planned.

Recently, the city of Cape Coral, in conjunction with WINK News and an investigator, conducted a sting operation in which a staged home was used to lure in unlicensed contractors to perform work that, by law, requires an active license.

As a result of the sting, police issued 21 cease and desist notices for either offering to perform unlicensed work or advertising that they can perform work that requires a license, even though they don’t have one.

Why Does a License Matter for Your Contractor?

Some might say, “What’s the big deal? They can do the work too, right?” In reality, hiring an unlicensed contractor can spell bad news for your home or office.

Simply put, a license is a sign of competence and someone who meets and abides by regulations and statutes. It’s a sign that you can trust this person to be able to carry out the project you need – such as painting in Southwest Florida.

Additionally, if something goes wrong during the work, your insurance company will likely balk at paying for any damage or costs if the work was performed by someone who wasn’t licensed.

You carry both that risk and the risk of having your job performed poorly – or not at all – if you go with an unlicensed contractor.

Always make sure that the person you hire to work on your home has a valid license that meets state requirements. You’ll save yourself a lot of grief – and you’ll have a much easier time making your home look great.
