Earlier, we talked about the importance of only hiring licensed contractors. Hiring unlicensed contractors opens you up to a lot of liability issues. It also increases the chance that the job won’t be done properly or well at all.

There’s another reason not to hire unlicensed contractors, a reason a family in Fort Myers learned.

Earlier this month, a family was robbed of $6,000 worth of stuff in their homes, stuff like their TV, iPads, and jewelry. Police used fingerprints to figure out who did it: it was a man who had a long track record of breaking into people’s homes and burglarizing them.

What really stands out about this case is that the man who broke into the family’s house had been hired by the family to do maintenance work around the property. He even asked a woman in the family about boxes on the walls, and asked if they were security alarms. She said they weren’t, and he knew he wouldn’t have to worry about security.

This isn’t to say that the family is to blame for the break-in. It does say something, though, about being really careful about who you hire to do work in your home.

That’s why it’s so important to hire only licensed, reputable contractors who have good standing in the community. Your valuables are at risk if you don’t exercise caution in who you hire. I’m just glad the cops were able to catch this guy before he was able to do any more damage.

Be careful the next time you go to hire a contractor to do work around your house.
