Does My Home Exterior Need Painting?

The paint on the exterior of your home serves more than just an aesthetic purpose; it helps prevent your home from natural damage.

All weather, whether good or bad, is rather unkind to the exterior of our homes, and paint acts as a barrier between the elements and the structure you call home. A homeowner may experience dry rot, mold and mildew, crumbling stucco, and more if the property’s exterior hasn’t received a quality paint job in some time.

The cost to repair these problems can easily surpass the price of even the most expensive contractor. Fortunately, there are a few things to look for when considering whether or not it’s time to paint your home.

Check the exterior of your home for a chalky residue that comes off when you touch it, as this is a clear sign that the composition of the paint is breaking down. Other visual warning signs such as peeling, or blistering may mean the wood beneath is already compromised. Make sure to check the wood for soft spots, or shrinking, and replace any damaged pieces before repainting. Stucco siding experiences similar problems, and should be checked for cracking or breaking, and should be repaired in tandem with painting.

Have any of your neighbors repainted lately? That’s not just a question for “keeping up with the Joneses” but could be an indicator that your home needs a coat or two, as well. If you live in a subdivision, or historic neighborhood, it’s likely that your home was built around the same time as the others in the area. If you’re neighbor needs a new paint job, it’s possible that it’s time for your home to be painted, as well.

If you have to ask yourself if the exterior of your home needs painting, it probably does.
