Help! My Bathroom Walls Are Ugly - Part One
A client of ours once contacted us saying the following, “I have paint peeling off of my bathroom walls, with dried splotches of what looks like burlap. What could this be?”
We have found that this individual is not alone, with many others experiencing a similar problem. When this happens, you have dried wallpaper glue on your bathroom walls. You will often find this problem on kitchen walls as well.
Unfortunately, many painting contractors do not know the proper way to remove wallpaper from walls without leaving behind the glue residue. Therefore, they prime and paint the walls, painting right over the glue.
Painting over wallpaper glue causes peeling and cracking...
The first picture you see is what can happen to the wall over a short period after painting over wallpaper glue. The paint starts to crack, separate, and peel off. It can also leave dried splotches on the wall with a sand texture that feels very course.
The second picture is what the walls looked like after we completely sanded the walls before we patched and textured the walls. The walls were so bad in this bathroom and we had to sand so much that we left little indentations in the walls. Fortunately, we are able to patch, sand, and texture the walls in a manner that makes it look brand new.
Sanded the walls before we patched and textured...
Many times contractors will quote a price for wallpaper removal and once they have reached their price point on the job they put paint over whatever it left. There is no science or price point to follow on wallpaper removal and every contractor is different; however, after being in the painting business for over 30 years one thing we have learned when it comes to wallpaper removal is that you never know how long it is going to take until you get started.
The most important thing to remember is to always hire the right painting contractor who knows how to properly remove the wallpaper, wallpaper glue, and properly prepare the walls before applying the primer and paint. At Ron’s Painting we do the job correctly the right way – every time.
