Hiring the Lowest Bid Painting Contractor

For over 30 years, I – Ron – have been painting homes. The one thing I have discovered is that homeowners, when receiving estimates for painting their homes, look at the bottom line first and don't really pay attention to what they are getting for the amount of money they are going to spend.  Like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.

During this month of August, in rainy season, I recently witnessed another painting contractor here in Fort Myers start a painting project on a commercial building.  They first pressure cleaned the building, as they should have, but then it went bad.

Yes, they pressure cleaned the building, but they did not use bleach to kill mold or mildew on the exterior surface. After the building was pressure cleaned, they proceeded to caulk where necessary and patch the cracks on the building on the same day. Doing this on the same day as the pressure cleaning will unfortunately trap moisture in the cracks.

From there, they started to paint the building, thus not allowing the caulk and patch to cure properly overnight before applying the top coat of paint. Then it rained that day and they applied paint to the building within 20 minutes before it started to rain.You can see what happened in the pictures on this post.  The top coat of paint that was applied has started to fail and it has bubbled all over the building. Now the contractor has to come back and repaint the building.

What this contractor did in one day takes Ron's Painting 3-4 days to do because we do it right.  If you hire the painter with the lowest bid, you’ll be sacrificing quality.  They will either use a lower grade of paint, cut back in the quality of their workmanship, finish 3-4 days of work in one day, or all three.  Remember, when a company bids very low, they have to make their profit somewhere – unfortunately it is usually at the expense of the home or building owner!  They are worried more about the bottom line and not about the quality of your paint job.
