How to Check the License for a Handyman or Maintenance Man in Southwest Florida

For many years now, I have been a proponent of educating homeowners about hiring a licensed contractor for the specific trade that they need done.  Many times when giving estimates to homeowners, they mention to me that they are going to have a handyman hang a ceiling fan, or change out a light fixture, or even change out a hot water tank.  Granted, the handyman is going to be a lot cheaper than a licensed contractor, such as an electrician, plumber or painter.  Well, there is a reason for this.

The licensed contractor has spent years in their trade,  have gone to school and is up to date with the latest codes that are required in their trade from Lee and Collier County or even the State of Florida. A handyman is not.  The contractor is also licensed in their trade and has liability insurance and workers compensation for their employees should someone get hurt on a homeowner’s property.

Before you hire your next contractor to do work on your home or business, after you have interviewed the different contractors and gotten all of your estimates, take just a few more minutes and do a little more homework.  This homework may save you thousands of dollars in the long run and a whole lot of headaches.

Call Lee County Contractor Licensing at 239-533-8895, or Collier County Licensing at 239- 252-2431 and ask the person in code enforcement if the contractor you are about to hire is properly licensed to do the work you need to have done. Also ask if their liability insurance and workers compensation is up to date, or if there are any complaints against this contractor.  This will be time well spent.

If you would like to know exactly what handymen are licensed to do in Lee and Collier County, here is a list, taken off of the Collier County Code enforcement website.

  • Assemble Exercise Equipment
  • Assemble Toys
  • Assemble Furniture
  • Assemble Gas Grills
  • Change Light Bulbs
  • Clean & Change Ceiling Fan Blades
  • Clean Garages
  • Clean Gutters
  • Edge Lawn
  • Hang Pictures
  • Haul Trash to Dump
  • Install Garage Organizers
  • Move Furniture
  • Mow Lawn
  • Pressure Clean Driveways and Walkways (no Roofs)
  • Rake Leaves
  • Repair Screens
  • Replace Caulking
  • Replace Door Handles
  • Wash Windows
  • Residential/Commercial Cleaning
  • Construction Cleaning

With a handyman or maintenance man license, they are not allowed to do anything in the construction trade.

Make sure you check the background and license for anyone who works on your home before moving forward with your next project. It will save you a lot of stress and headaches in the future.
