How to Choose the Right Color for your Exterior Painting Project

Are you ready to paint the exterior of your home, but can’t decide what the best color is?

This is a common problem for many homeowners. I get asked quite often to help with choosing the right color because many homeowners don’t know how to go about making the right choice. And choosing the right color for an exterior painting project is important, since it is what people will immediately notice about your home.

For starters, take a look at your roof. Your roof probably won’t change much while you own your home. You may replace it, but it’ll probably still look the same, and even if you change it, it’ll probably stay like it is for years. So, I think it’s a good idea to pick paint that compliments your roof color. A light color scheme with a dark roof looks great. A Southwestern-style terra cotta roof goes great with earth-tone colors and reds, oranges, and yellows.

Also, think about the climate. Southwest Florida is a subtropical climate. The sun can really cause paint colors to fade even within two to three years. So, when you choose a color, think about the effect the sun will have on it, and pick a paint color that can withstand fading. Earth tones are really good at holding their color and not fading over time. Ask a paint pro to help you pick the right paints and shades for our weather.

Finally, take a look at your home and how it is built. Do you have exposed brick? What about wood or stone? If you do, try to pick paint colors that go well with exposed surfaces. Your paint should complement your entire home and make all of it look great.
