Keeping the Black from Coming Back on Your Ceiling, Part 2 [PICTURES]

In my previous blog we talked about mold and mildew on a lanai wood ceiling, and how to get rid of the mold.

In the case of this client they wanted to completely change the look of the ceiling. They just had their pool resurfaced with new tile, and they were changing the cushion on the chairs on the rear lanai. So, it was time for a change and a more modern look.

What we did to make sure the paint would adhere to the existing oil-based stain on the wood ceiling is prime the ceiling with one coat of Zinsser oil-based bonding primer, Cover Stain in straight white. We allowed the primer to dry overnight, then base-coated the ceiling with a coat of Sherwin Williams Duration in a gloss finish.

As you can see in the first picture after painting the ceiling in Dover White it really brightened up the ceiling and gave it a more modern look.

However the homeowner wanted a little more color to the ceiling, so what we did is faux finish Modern Masters Shimmery Sky to the ceiling in a distressed look. As you can see in the second picture where the ceiling is 1/2 done.

The last three pictures are of the ceiling completely faux finished using the Shimmery Sky, and to keep it light on the rear lanai we painted all of the walls and pillars in the Sherwin Williams Dover White using a gloss finish. This really brightened up the rear lanai, and by using a gloss finish on the walls, and a gloss and satin faux on the ceiling, it will be hard for mold and mildew growth.

But remember when you live in Southwest Florida, you are in the tropics, so I always recommend having exterior surfaces cleaned once a year to keep mold and mildew from growing.
