Painting Your Home: Do You Have Cracks in the Concrete of Your Pool Deck?

If you have cracks in the concrete of your pool deck, then you are more than likely wondering what you can do to fix them.

Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done that will last.

For years, we have tried many different products on the market to solve this problem of cracks in concrete. We have tried everything from using different types of caulk to trying a variety of sealants, and nothing works.  In fact, we have even watched what other contractors use and unfortunately their products do not work either.

In this picture, you will see where the cracks have been caulked, but if you look closely you can see where the caulk is pulling away from the side of the concrete and the existing coating of paint is not adhering to the caulk. A professional contractor who specializes in pool decks and driveways applied the caulk to this pool deck about two years ago.  This picture is an example of what happens over time when using this caulk to address issues with cracks in concrete. Not only did this homeowner pay good money for a fix that did not work, but also the cracks are more noticeable after they are caulked!

At Ron’s Painting, we recommend to our clients one of two things:

1. Live with the cracks after the deck is painted. More often than not, efforts to minimize or reduce the appearance of the cracks actually result in more noticeable problems (as demonstrated in the picture).

2. Put down 1-inch pavers.  By putting down pavers, you can help cover the imperfections on your deck. When you choose this option, you not only get less maintenance, but you will also not have to worry about painting your deck every couple of years. In addition, it adds a richness to your rear lanai.
