Painting Your Home’s Ceilings

“I want to paint my ceilings a certain color, but I do not want my vents and lights to stick out. What can I do?”

Excellent question, and one we get a lot from homeowners who are interested in our custom painting service.

What often happens is this: a homeowner will come to us with a paint scheme in mind. He or she will want a darker color or an accent for the ceilings to accentuate certain key parts of the room, mostly the crown molding. Choosing a darker color or an accent color really helps the crown molding pop.

The first step for us is to remove the A/C vents from the ceiling and spray paint them to match the new color of the ceiling. We then make sure to paint the outer rim of the ceiling lights the same color as the ceiling. When we do a faux finish, we remove the light bulbs from the fixture and apply the faux finish to the inner portion of the light before putting the bulb back in place, on the a/c vents we faux finish them in place, then the light and the vents completely disappear. The effect is startling – the light completely disappears!

Before we paint the A/C vents, however, we take care to clean them and prime them with a coat of Cover Stain bonding primer before we paint them, to ensure the highest-quality result. Of course, this takes place in our spray booth in our shop; no one wants a mess in their home!
