Popcorn Ceilings and Painting
Does your home or the home you are considering purchasing have popcorn ceilings and you are wondering how to best paint the ceiling given its unique texture. Or, are you looking to remove the popcorn ceiling texture all together? If so, then definitely keep reading because painting a popcorn ceiling can be tricky and removing the popcorn ceiling can be hazardous to your health depending upon the age of your home.
Successfully Painting Popcorn Ceilings
If you have ever tried to use a paint roller to paint your popcorn ceilings, then you have probably found out the hard way that this is not effective and can cause quite a mess. Plus, the paint does not get into all of the spots resulting in part of the ceiling being the new color and part of it remaining the old color.
When painting a popcorn ceiling, it is incredibly important that you spray paint the ceiling as opposed to using a roller. A professional painter can actually spray paint the popcorn ceiling for you and keep the ceiling paint from getting on your walls at the same time—allowing you to get the desired effect without all of the mess.
Removing Popcorn Ceiling from Your Home
On the other hand, if you have decided that you would like to completely remove the popcorn ceiling from your home, then the first thing you need to do is determine the year in which your home was built. Many homes built before 1980 have a high chance of having asbestos in your popcorn ceiling. The first step is to get a small piece and take it to AMRC-Environmental at 5230 Clayton Ct. in Fort Myers and allow them to test whether or not there is asbestos in your ceiling.
If asbestos is found, then hire a professional to remove the popcorn texture. If not, then you can scrape off the popcorn texture, coat the ceiling with joint compound, and then add the texture you would rather have on the ceiling.
