Why Is General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance Important?

Does your Sanibel or Captiva Islands contractor have General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance? If not, keep looking. When you hire someone to do work on your home, if an accident occurs and the contractor you hired does not have General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance, then you very well may be left with the bill.

For example, let’s assume that you live in a condo association on the 4th floor. You hire a painter to paint the inside of your condo.  The painter is walking down the hall with his 6’ step ladder and busts a sprinkler head.

This is where General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance comes into play. If the company you hired does not have this protective liability insurance, then you could inevitably be held responsible for replacing the sprinkler head.

Regardless of whether you are hiring a painter, maintenance man, plumber, or any other company to perform services to your Sanibel or Captiva Islands home, it is essential that you request a General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance certificate before allowing the company to service your home.  Make sure the company provides you with the actual certification and does not simply offer verbal reassurance.

Will My Homeowners Insurance Cover These Accidents?

Although your homeowners insurance may cover damages to your home, it will not cover the damages done outside of your home (in a hallway at your condo complex, your neighbor’s lawn, etc.). However, General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance will cover these unexpected accidents, preventing you from having to foot the bill.

Never rely on your homeowners insurance when hiring a company to do work inside or outside your home. Instead, call upon a company that has General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance and provide you with proof that the policy is active.

At the end of the day, you do not want to be stuck with unexpected expenses that could have been avoided by simply ensuring that your contractor had the proper insurance. Therefore, ensure that your contractor has General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance before you hire them to perform services to your home.
