Watch for This Red Flag when Hiring a Painting Contractor

When hiring a painting contractor, always do your homework before you sign on the dotted line. I had a recent experience that led me to write this blog and share yet another bad experience. (Yes, I am writing another blog on unlicensed painting contractors.)

I was at a Sherwin Williams the other day purchasing paint and I was shocked at what I witnessed. At the counter was a homeowner purchasing paint to have his home painted. That’s not surprising if you are going to paint your own home. However, if your painter is standing right next to you, and you have to open an account at Sherwin Williams to purchase the paint for your painter, something is wrong. If a homeowner hires a painter and the painter asks the homeowner to purchase the paint for the job, that should raise a red flag.

A licensed, reputable painting contractor should be able to purchase and provide the paint for any paint job that they are working on. If they do not have a credit line with the paint company and have to ask the homeowner to purchase the paint, then obviously the contractor is trying to hide something...like not being a licensed painting contractor. I have seen some horrible things painters have done to homeowners over the last year, and it is getting worse.

Always protect yourself and hire a licensed painting contractor. They will not be the cheapest, but remember you get what you pay for – and when it comes to your home, you want only the best.
