Now that the furniture has been primed, our next step is getting the furniture ready for the finishing coat of paint. We remove the furniture from the spray booth and sand it smooth, vacuum off the dust and wipe it down with a tack rag. It is very important to make sure the bonding primer is thoroughly dry before applying the finish coat of paint. During our sanding process we can tell this by watching our sand paper and see if it gums up or if the primer sands really nicely. If the sand paper gums up we must wait another 24 hours.
Once the furniture has been sanded we then apply the finish coat of paint. When we paint furniture or kitchen cabinets we always use Glidden Devflex, which comes in a satin or semi-gloss finish. The reason we like the Glidden Devflex is because it’s an industrial enamel that can be used on the exterior of homes, so we can use this product when we paint exterior patio furniture. The Glidden Devflex will give you:
- Alkyd-like hardness and durability
- Excellent color retention
- High opacity
- Non-yellowing
- All purpose finish for multiple surfaces
- Excellent resistance to grease, oil and water
- Excellent flow and leveling
- Resists peeling and chipping
- Low odor and water clean-up
- Washable and scrubbable
- Good abrasion resistance which is very important when painting furniture or cabinetry.
Once the furniture is sprayed with the finish coat of paint we allow it to dry for 24 hours before handing it. Many times furniture will require a second coat of paint, just like these dinette chair; when we spray we can't always get to all of the areas of the furniture with the first coat of paint, so a second coat is applied 4 hours after the first coat of paint.
