“My deck is painted with Ultra Crete Acryli-Deck currently. It's in need of a repaint as some areas have worn through (not peeling, just seems to be worn). The painter I spoke with wants to use a Xylene-based paint. I see your comments about using acrylic over Xylene, but what about the other way around? Is it safe to use Xylene-based over acrylic?”
You cannot use any type of a Xylene-based paint or stain over anything acrylic. The Xylene will lift or eat away at the acrylic and it will be a complete mess. The general rule of thumb is Xylene over Xylene only or acrylic over acrylic. My recommendation is to use the exact same product that was used the last time it was painted or stained, if it is available. If it is not, go to your closest Sherwin Williams paint store and talk with the store manager to see what they have that can go over what you currently have, but make sure it is an acrylic. It is always a good idea to take the old can with you.
