I’ve talked before about how you should hire only licensed contractors, for many reasons. Lately, a few people got the memo during what was called “Operation Freeloader”.

“Operation Freeloader” was a three-day sting from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit. It targeted unlicensed contractors working in Lee County. As a result of the sting, fourteen contractors were charged with working without a license. Many of them were also found to be working without workers’ compensation insurance, and were violating workers’ comp laws, too.

The Sheriff’s Office did the sting because unlicensed contractors has become a big problem in Lee County. Construction is happening all around us, which means there are plenty of chances for unscrupulous contractors to try and get work from unsuspecting businesses and people.

Why is this such a big deal?

Only licensed contractors have the skills and training needed to do the work you need around your home or business. Unlicensed contractors don’t play by the rules, or work based on common-sense safety practices. What you’re getting is a contractor who will cut corners, or scam you out of a job well done.

Hiring unlicensed contractors means you’re taking a risk with your home or office. Make sure the job gets done the right way. Hire only licensed contractors when you need professional work performed by professionals who abide by the law.
